What is relative humidity?

  • It's the amount of water in the air.

  • Relative humidity indicates whether the air is saturated with water vapour or not.If it is 100 % ,then the air is saturated otherwise it is not. This saturation can occur at any Temperature and with any amount of water vapour.Hence relative humidity can also be known as the degree of saturation. In other words it is the percentage of moisture content in the air.The actual definition follows.
A given sample of moist air contains water vapour in it which may be either the maximum possible amount for that temperature or a fraction of the maximum possible amount.Hence the relative humidity is defined as the ratio of the amount of water vapor actually present in the air to the amount of water vapour required to saturate it at that temperature. This is expressed as a fraction or as a percentage.
With the same amount of water vapour in the air,the relative humidity may be less for a higher temperature and more for a lower temperature.
