The weird "G" on the Nokia 6610i?

  • When I put my phone on standby or in any of the menu and while readinga a message. I noticed that there is a "G" appear on the top left handside of the phone. Can you explain how that G got in there and how I can remove it?

  • gcse-ga: Thank you for your Question. The 'G' that you see in the upper-left corner of your Nokia 6610i's screen is the phone's indicator that it has registered itself with the GPRS network. This will occur in one of two situations: 1. When an application on your phone requires and establishes a connection to the GPRS network in order to send or receive data; or, 2. If the phone is configured such that a GPRS connection is always established whenever a GPRS network is found. You can read more about this in the Nokia 6610i's user guide, found online at: http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,,55722,00.html http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/guides/Nokia_6610i_UG_en.pdf In particular, in the section entitled "Connectivity (Menu 13)", Nokia explains how this indicator works and also explains how you can use the GPRS Menu (found in the Connectivity menu) to configure the phone to be either "Always Online" or "When Needed". In the case where your phone is set to "Always Online", if your cellular service provider supports GPRS service on the cellular network in your area, the phone will register itself with the GPRS network, and the "G" indicator will appear on your screen. Please check the setting by going to the Connectivity menu, then the GPRS menu, and Select the GPRS connection option to see what its current setting is. If it is set to "Always Online", change it to "When Needed". If it is already set to "When Needed", then this implies that there is an application running on your phone that is establishing a GPRS connection. If this is the case, then you will need to take a look on your Applications menu, and see if you have recently installed anything that might be the cause. If the setting was set to "Always Online", and yet the indicator has only recently appeared, this can be caused by either your service provider recently enabling your phone/account for GPRS access, or if your service provider has recently upgraded the cellular network in your area to provide GPRS service. Another possibility would be if you recently changed locations, from an area without GPRS service to one that does. The difference between the two settings ("Always Online" and "When Needed") is the amount of time needed to initialize a network-enabled application. If your phone is set to "Always Online", then the phone will automatically register itself with the network and maintain a connection for as long as you are in range of a GPRS network, meaning that network-enabled applications will have instantaneous access to the network. If the setting is set to "When Needed", every time a network-enabled application starts up, it will have to wait for the phone to register itself with the GPRS network and establish a connection. Depending on your application, this delay may be either an annoyance or may interfere with the application's performance. If you do not use many network-enabled applications, I would recommend setting the GPRS Connection setting to "When Needed". This way, you will always know when an application is using the GPRS network, through the appearance of the "G" indicator. Please note that the GPRS network is used by network-enabled applications, multimedia messages, and when your phone acts as a GPRS modem for a PC (one that is connected through either a cable or infrared connection to the phone). To summarize, the "G" indicator simply tells you when your phone has established a connection to the GPRS network of your service provider. You only need to be concerned if you have your phone set to "When Needed", are not aware of any applications running on your phone that requires a network connection, yet still see the indicator. If this happens, review the applications installed on your phone to identify the culprit. Please let me know if this information helps you gain control over the "G" indicator on your screen.
