Why are flights from DFW to Hawaii scheduled so poorly or is it me?

  • I was looking at the timetable for flights between Dallas and Maui or Honolulu and thought that flights seem to be poorly scheduled. When you fly to Hawaii from Dallas you leave too early in the day and thus waste your entire day in the air. Why not have a 2pm flight so you can arrive in time for dinner in Hawaii and at the same time get a little work done in the morning? The way back is also awful in that you arrive in Dallas at 5AM. If AA scheduled the flights later, then we could have a more leisurely afternoon in Hawaii and not have to bother our relatives/friends with such early pick up times.

I am rambling, but does anybody have any thoughts on AA's Hawaii scheduling? Am I missing something?

  • The return flight lands at 5am so it can allow passengers to connect to onward destinations with departures between 6 and 8am. Look at all of AA's redeyes from the west coast to DFW or ORD - they all land before 6am.

The DFW-HNL flight is probably timed to leave a reasonable but not excessive amount of ground time at HNL to clean and cater the plane and send it back on its way.

  • One of the things that has not changed in many years is the timing of the flights to and fro HNL (the others are new). AA5 and AA123 have always left at about the same time in the 10 years that I have flown that route. Aircraft utilisation is the key, and I think that I am right by saying that American overnights no aircraft at HNL. I hate redeyes, and endure them in winter back to London purely because I will not chance going to the points from where I can do a day flight. Whilst I take your point, with a 4 hour time difference (5 in summer) between Texas and HNL, you are always going to "waste" part of one day in the air. None of the west coast flights arrives much before 11.30am. Cheer up, Hawaii is definitely worth a little inconvenience.

  • Unfortunately, there are many other things worse than depart/arrive times about the flights to/from Hawaii.

    Just don't get me started..

  • Well, from the perspective of a Hawai'i resident, I wish AA offered at least one early am flight to the mainland. UA and HA do, thus making it possible to reach the midwest and even the East Coast without flying on a red eye...
