  • Japan and China agreed Monday to launch a shuttle flight service between Tokyo's Haneda airport and Shanghai's Hongqiao airport, possibly around Oct. 8, according to the transport ministry.

Wow, I couldn't be happier. The two Asian cities I travel to most are Seoul and Shanghai. Might have to change my nick to KI-HND :D

  • Does anyone here know how the Haneda Gimpo "charter" flights operate? Are they just regular flights in all but name?

    Can't wait till this happens.

  • Hi!

    Thank you,derpelikan-san.

I also think I wish more asian flight are operated from HND.

    >>i guess the prices will go down as on the seoul route.
Now,ANA and JAL are more expensive HND-GMP than NRT-ICN.
I wish the prices will be more enexpensive.

  • really surprised that Chinese airlines haven't deployed more a/c to Japan, even at the expense of Korea, but especially domestic routes, because the margins are so much higher

They probably can't get the slots.

  • The Haneda-Gimpo deal was two airlines per country.

Interesting. Is there a third airline in those two countries?

  • Hi!

Indeed,It will start to operate "charter flight" between Haneda and Hongqiao from this Oct. 8.
But The schedule decide nothing else.
it decided the flight is just four round trip in a day.

  • A lot of Japanese and Korean companies have their Shanghai offices in the Honqqiao area and factories west of Shanghai This route is going to make a killing...

  • Well, NRT<->PVG is already "sky high", with C fares going for around $1800 (biz-wari fares are never sold on this route.) And C is almost always full.

And HND<->GMP is also priced higher than NRT<->ICN, but not by much. About $600 for Y and $900 for C.

If Handa to Hongqiao flights are added to the existing inventory of Narita<->Pudong, then this may help keep the costs within "reason". We shall see.

but i found 20K for an eco award to china very nice.
spent 20K + 30usd tax instead of paying these ridicular ANA fares..

i guess HND will be available for star awards?

    dp

  • Would the Chinese operators on this route fly codeshares or compete head-to-head?

It's a "super premium" route par excellence so how skyhigh can prices get? 1000 USD for R/T in econ and 2000 - 3000 in biz?

The Gimpo - Honqqiao route was announced even earlier but how is the practical preparation there going?

  • Interesting. Is there a third airline in those two countries?

4 Chinese airlines fly to Japan and Korea: CA, MU, FM, and CZ.

Since I now find myself drawn into this thread, I'll add a few comments:

-the China-Korea market has become pretty darn competitive during the past several years; we've now reached the point where PEK-ICN is within striking distance of PEK-SHA, and is sometimes cheaper (this makes sense to me since the distances are roughly equal)
-China-Japan has yet to receive such love; aside from NW's occasional fare sales and the presence of outliers like Iran Air and Pakistan Airlines, the situation remains bleak if you don't use package deals (e.g. PVG-HIJ, one of frequent routes, frequently costs $1000 outright, but only $350 if you tack on an overpriced hotel)
-miles remain an invaluable asset to China-Japan travelers; 20k UA miles can get me from China to pretty much any (semi-major) airport in Japan on short notice (availability is very good and there are lots of options)
-I'm really surprised that Chinese airlines haven't deployed more a/c to Japan, even at the expense of Korea, but especially domestic routes, because the margins are so much higher

  • Yes. They are "regular" flights, served by 777-200 ER's. JL even uses 747 planes on this route.

  • They probably can't get the slots.

I was speaking in reference to Chinese airlines that have all the slots they could ever want in PEK and PVG. They could easily swap out some failing domestic routes in exchange for new service to Japan... not to NRT or KIX, but to cities that are currently underserved. Building on my HIJ example, PEK is currently without a flight. CA or MU could easily give up one of their (15 a-piece) SHA frequencies --that often go out near empty-- and change this; HIJ has plenty of slots to spare.

  • The Gimpo - Honqqiao route was announced even earlier but how is the practical preparation there going?

GMP-SHA was announced to launch early next year, like March 2008. Now there's a rumor that they try to start it at the same time with HND-SHA. Currently there are too many ICN-PVG flights - 14 daily widebodies, and load factor is not that good. Wonder what will happen to ICN-PVG once GMP-SHA opens.

cf> When GMP-HND started, the condition to give rights to the airliners was "not to reduce ICN-NRT frequency", and both routes survived successfully.

  • what i like about the HND route is, that you save at least 1700yen x 2 = 3400yen .

going to NRT is expensive 3000yen for the NEX while going to HND is aroudn 1200yen if i remember correctly from shinagawa. and the HND airport is only 20mins from shinagawa.

so you save 3400yen + 80 minutes in travel time.
    its even gets better.

in shanghai you save at least 70RMB x 2 = 140RMB for the cab fare from the airport as it is not so far aways as PVG.

so if you chose the right hotel , it might save you 30 minutes x 2 = 60 minutes in shanghai ...

hope that more flights will be operated from HND...
