Way OT: 2006 Golf 2.0 TDI

  • Landed in Munich yesterday morning and picked up a VW Golf 2.0l TDI from Budget with 12km on the clock. Not sure that I like it's new shape though - it stands much taller than previous generations of Golfs. Performance is very nice though - 6 speed manual transmission - lots of go. Inside is well appointed with clever storage bins everywhere, nice surface materials on the dash and seats. The taller profile seems to give a better view forward, but I still don't like the styling as much as older generation of golfs.
Being a diesel, it gets very good fuel mileage - much better than my Subaru Outback. The trip computer advertises approx 790km to the tank and even with autobahn speeds, the average fuel consumption is quite low at 6.3l / 100km.

Brakes work quite well :p as I discovered going from about 190km/h to 0 in a very short distance on the A9 near Ingolstadt. I always wondered how the famous Stau's form on the autobahn, and at least one method is the time honoured 'lookey loo' slowing right down to gawk at a minor fender bender, thus causing the rest of us travelling at warp factor 10 to shave a couple of years off our life spans as we hit the brakes.

Anyone else driven the new golf? Comments?

    cheers, MWAC

Yes, I've driven the 2.0T GTI (the same engine as the new Audi A3 and A4, and will also be in the upcoming Jetta GLI). Infinitely better than the soggy and numb model that's still on sale in Canada, in every aspect, from power delivery to the transmission to the ride and handling. I would say that it's the best handling front-drive car I've driven.

  • Though I wasn't entirely keen on the new look, I just bought a 2006 Passat - very nice ride, and the new 2.0T engine makes the thing FLY. I don't like the look of the 2006 Jetta - looks like a high riding Corolla.

I wish. I rented a 2005 Golf TDI in France in May and loved it. It's stiff suspension was perfect for the narrow, extremely twisty roads of Auvergne. My previous rental in France was a 2004 Renault Mégane--nicer styling, in my view, but more understeer and lean on the corners.

One thing the Golf had that was new for me: back-up sensors. Very handy once you get a picture of when they start to chirp.
