Just wondering if anyone has run across anything like Stratomatic for Soccer? Some sort of card based game that lets you play a game of soccer.
Thanks in advance

Thanks for the link, Chris. I collect soccer games like a nut. I agree that soccer is hard to reduce to a board game, because it's so fluid. Baseball is a perfect sport for a board game (and there are lots of excellent baseball board games).
I should also note that I played Strat-o-matic hockey as a kid, and I loved it. I thought it was very well-done.

I downloaded the basic game (its free, and takes about ten seconds), but apparently you need MS-Excel to open it. I don't have it, and in fact I don' even know what it is. Apparently all the game is is the cards you print out, is there a way to open it with a word processor?
The object is to move down the field and to get into the penalty area and shoot for a goal. On the shot you can score, or get a corner, or a goalie kick (or save). You can also score from the long-distance squares.
There are free kicks, corners, penalty kicks and goal kicks. The defenders and keepers have more strength than the midfielders or strikers. Scoring is just about right.
Gold trophy (rather large) and a cool transluscent digital timer are included to set whatever time you want for a game.
Football fans rate this game very high world-wide. It is available in The USA, Canada, England, Spain, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Australia, and possibly some other countries.
It was invented in Germany, just before the World Cup.

Though I would encourage you to check out www.eofa.org and esms, which are computer based decendents of the stratomatic games, I understand the nostalgia behind it.
It just so happens that my local paper ran a little article just on this subject...

A couple of years ago I searched on ebay for soccer board games. If memory serves me well, the only ones I found were old english kids games which I doubt come anywhere close to approaching stratomatic. But my search was by now means exhaustive (NOw that I think of it, I don't think i've ever tried searching google).
THE BOARDGAME THAT KICKS!

The rules are in English and Spanish, and it plays exactly like soccer (football). We brought it out for the WC in Germany in 2006 (Fussball Taktik 2006). We had lots of requests from other countries and so brought out the English/Spanish/Italian/French, etc. version. The first STW games were sold in the US, Canada and world-wide this past Christmas. Comes with a cool timer, trophy, yellow and red cards, etc. High quality wood pawns (11 per team) and pieces. Nice 'flow' to the game, and a nice full pitch.
There are extra teams (yellow and green) available seperately.
It is good for adults or children, pro or novice, male or female. We keep adding more and more countries. Please give it a try. If you have any question please ask. Check out the reviews page.
Ask and ye shall receive...

whaaa...? to cool i'll check it out. i was hoping to find pro teams as well and lower division english sides(because, yes, i do live in a fantasy world...;) )
How can it be any fun when there are no actual player or team ratings?
Complete waste of time.
There has to be something or soemone out there to help get some reality invovlement.
we still haven't gotten it going yet.
I'd like to see one like strat-o-matic baseball. detailed stats and what not. based on real life percentages.
