I am an aspiring law school student. What organizations and "clubs" should I be in?

  • That depends on what kind of law you are interested in.

  • Depends on which law school.

Going to Peperdine? Join the Young Republicans. Columbia? Democratic Party. Harvard? Communist Party. BYU? John Birch Society.

  • You should be involved with student government, if only on a committee. It would be good if you participated in some community effort, such as getting people registered to vote, or helping poor people get their taxes done. Working on a school newspaper is helpful, since schools know that articles in a paper involve research with public good in mind.

  • First, re-consider law school. Do some research before committing to it.

Second, most law schools are interested largely in your LSAT and GPA.

Third, law schools are more interested in seeing that you are involved - the specific nature of the involvement doesn't matter. Being involved in a pre-law club isn't any more valuable than being a member of, say, the Garden Club.

Fourth, a BETTER idea would be to intern for an attorney or judge, or work as a file clerk in a law firm, or do volunteer work - e.g. if you want to do personal injury, volunteer at a hospital.

    Finally, re-consider law school.
