Older people and pets?

  • I recently moved in with my grandmother to help her after she became ill. She was delighted and ecstatic that I was bringing my chihuahua with me. My chihuahua had a therapeutic effect on my grandma. After they bonded, she was happier, felt livelier, and became healthier. She absolutely loves my dog.

The only problem is, she doesn't know how to properly take care of him. She tends to forget what is good or bad for a dog. When Im at school or out doing something, she'll give him coffee or gallon milk, and even bits of chocolate! Not to mention any table scrap. I've told her repeatedly that it could kill him, but she says "When I was younger our dogs ate anything, he'll be fine." I take my dog to the vet regularly so he is fine. But I don't know what she might give him to eat while Im not around. What can I do?

Plus I have no clue what to do when I move out. I love my doggy so much and dont want to leave him but, my grandma has become so attached I would feel horribel taking him away. Please help.

  • She may have had dogs when she was younger, but odds are they weren't chihuahuas. Tell her that these foods effect smaller dogs differently.
Maybe you could buy treats specifically for your dog and tell her to treat him to these while you are gone.
~Animals always make people happy. When I went to see my grandmother in her nursing home I brought her parrot for a visit. It took me the longest time to get out of that place. Everyone wanted to see the pretty bird and hear him say something. Seeing him made them so happy.
Maybe what your grandmother likes is having someone to look after.

  • well you grandma means well, but tell her that giving him a gallon of milk will give him the runs and it will harm him for his size ,giving him scraps can hurt him,but like chicken is O.K but other things can, a little piece of plain chicken will do him no harm, coffee could make him very ill and possible kill him just tell her its you dog and you make the the rules for him be nice tho.
