Can you use a 40 inch newer LCD as a computer monitor?

  • i hardly watch TV, but am in need of a desktop. I thought if I got a TV, I could save money and use it as a monitor also. What do you think?

  • The first two responders are both right and the only thing I need to add though is to be aware that computer monitors today usually have some high resolution displays. For instance, our iMac runs at 1920-by-1200 resolution and there are monitors that go even higher.

My caution is that you are not going to get that sort of resolution out of a TV and most especially if you use some of the lower quality connection methods. So make sure you check the owners manual with the TV to see what resolutions it actually supports.

  • A lot of people are misinformed. For the most part, HD tvs are not as high res. as a computer monitor. I saw most had .50mm Dot Pitch, whereas my monitor is .22 horiz by .24 vertical dotpitch. You could prolly plug ur comp into the tv, but would have a hard time reading text. Games should look fine. Report Abuse

  • also a good note is to find out what resolution your TV can support in VGA vs other connection types. I have a Toshiba HDTV and in VGA mode I believe it only goes up to a pitiful 640x480, but using a DVI to HDMI connection it fully supports my computer 1920x1080 (1080P). Report Abuse

  • YES YOU CAN! BUT you need make sure your Television has the same ports on the back to support to output ports on your video card. Forinstance, My video card supports S-video, so I can use a TV with an S-video port. Also, Some TV´s that are LCD support VGA and other computer formats.... The best way to find out if your computer is compatible is looking at the ports on the back of your TV and comparing them with the back of your computer... if you see two that are alike, then they are compatible.

  • Yes you can take a Big monitor and use it as a TV also when ever you can and you can even add a TV tuner card in your PC.

  • yeah mate ....get a v.g.a cable from your local computer shop an link them up together.... then use your fn button and f4 button to transfer your image from your pc to your LCD tv .............easy
