How far in advance can you book an award ticket?

  • Just got word of a trip to the UK in July 2003 (yes, that's 2 years from now). I'll want to book 2 FC award tickets, and I'm assuming availability will be scarce so I want to book early. How far ahead of time can I do this?

We went to London in April of this year, the week before Easter (returning the day before Easter). We booked 3 FC award tickets. We made the reservations in early September for travel in early April, which was 7 months in advance. Going to the UK, I got the exact flights I wanted with no problem. Returning, I couldn't get on my first choice of flight, but had no trouble getting on my second choice. I was told that the difficulty was that we were traveling close to Easter.

This is exactly correct. I am in the process of planning a two week trip to Europe (SEA-ORD-LHR) for the latter part of June 2002. I have heard both numbers, 330 and 331 for the number of days AA's computer can see flights that are loaded into the system.

I presently have 4 F-Class seats booked with seat assignments on my first choice of flights. This weekend I will call to book the return flights which are for early July.

To save yourself the pain of the mental gymnastics for date calculation i.e. today +330, please point your browser to:

A very useful and interesting site. Good luck.

  • Yes indeed I had the same strategy for Hawaii @ New Years. Called 331 days out and snagged it!!!

  • I booked an award ticket as far as 13 months in advance. Traveled from DAY - DUB

  • anyone have any idea whether this is true for non-aa metal as well?

    specifically, qantas?

  • I just booked reward tickets for our Hawaii trip next June. I started calling the midnight of the 331th day to check if the seats have been released into the system. It took me several more calls until I received a positive response -- around 1:30 a.m. I had my choice of flights for my outbound date. It was terrific! Then AA "held" the reservation for 30 days to allow me to book the return segment. I went through the same deal on the 331th day from my return date and got my first choice of flights/seats. Changing the dep/arr. cities would incur a fee but no fee to change the dates/times for the trip; so if you are certain about your trip, it pays to book the reward ticket as early as possible. In fact, I just called today to change the return date of that Hawaii trip -- I wanted to move the return trip up by a day. Seats were available on one of the acceptable times and the change took mere minutes.
