Islamic scripture and music?

  • i don't get how it is obscene for the words of the koran to be converted to song, i thought melody was the voice of God and lyrics the highest attainable honor for a written word... why should this offend Allah?

  • "The Prophet said (which means), "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful."

    [Al-Bukhari Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v].

This Hadeeth states that musical instruments are Haram, and there is no disagreement among the scholars on this.

In his book, Ighathat Al-Lahfan, Ibn Al-Qayyim said, "When the Prophet said, 'render as lawful,' he meant that it was unlawful, then the people made it lawful."

Haram means forbidden. Most Muslims don't follow this rule... hence the hadith prophesied what would happen and what is happening. One reason perhaps. But notice Musical Instruments, I believe it would be okay if in a Nasheed (Acapella).

  • Wherever you got that information, it's wrong.

It does not offend Allah. It is FINE for God to be praised in music.
It is not obscene at all.
    Islamic music is beautiful.

  • It does not "offend" Allah...thats incorrect way to put it...

Allah has ordered for muslims to not listen to Music as test for them, and we know music is beautiful, but We stay away from it because we want to get paradise. Also there is hadith the prophet (pbuh) said that The hell was covered with beautiful things, and paradise is covered with harsh things. So the true Muslim will have patient with those hardships come with paradise and stay away from that beautiful things around hell, such as Music, Women and so on...

  • Some Muslims as Duran before me think that based on some hadith (supposed actions and sayings of the prophet) music is 'haram' forbidden.
Also, some misinterpret and mistranslate a surah of the quran. They translate the word hadith into idle talks and put in brackets behind the man made interpretation: (.i.e. music and singing).

Next to that, to Muslims the Quran is the direct word from God and in that view sacred, not to be played or toyed with; they consider it disrespectful.

As in my belief Allah never forbade music (there is music all around you, the birds that are singing, the sound of the ocean etc etc) there should be no problem what so ever if it is done in a proper manner.

It is just another way to praise the Almighty. And no one knows if it would offend Him anyways..... we only can say it offends some fundamentalist brothers and sisters!

The hadith provided by the bro above me is considered weak, cause it has a broken chain of narration. Not all scholars agree on music being haram...... next to that, i do wonder how it is that many of my esteemded brothers and sisters take the word of scholars, imams and other mere mortals over the word of Allah Almighty....... how little faith they have in Him!
