» N00b interface...
Hi,
I've just set up a system (Media Centre) for my parents for them to use but i think there is to many things for them to mess with so they could change settings by mistake etc and mess up the setup. (They are old after all lol).
Does anyone else think it would be good if we could remove the settings etc and boot in to some kind of N00b mode (LOL) so they can only play movies and music and things like that but adjust no settings as this will be set for the by admin (admin being me).
Any thoughts?create a profile for them.

STORY
Pearson Airport to ban cellphone service
The Ottawa Citizen
Monday, July 01, 2002
Airport police and other federal agencies in Toronto are stocking up on two-way radios as Pearson International Airport is slated to become the first world-class airport to ban cellphone service.
The Greater Toronto Airports Authority said power will be cut Wednesday to communications equipment owned by companies that provide airport cellular service. It said Rogers Wireless, Bell, Telus and Microcell failed to come up with $1 million each to improve cellular signal strength.
The power cut will also silence pagers, fax machines and Internet access. Officers of 14 federal agencies at the airport have been scrambling for two-way radios, ...... - 2008-11-30
» Why does moving/deleting folders take forever?
it looks like the xbmc file manager is not handling the tasks of moving or deleting directories properly. when moving a folder with a lot of files to a new directory, it goes through all the files one by one and physically moves them around the disk--i can even hear the hdd churping sound. that's a very inefficient way to do it! we're not moving anything from partition to partition here, people, so there is no need to rape the hard drive every time you move something. all that's required is to rename the directory in the fat-x table.
same goes for deletions. when you delete something in windows, it takes half a second, because there is no need to physically erase those files from the hard drive. it works great in other dashes, so why ...... - 2008-11-30
» Questions for FT experts
Hi:
I have a couple of questions, if this is not the right place, moderator please move:
1. Can someone point to the specific rule/s that allows a person traveling from US to a forign destination, then connecting to another flight which will allow the 2pc baggage for the customer based on original point of departure (in the US). A friend is arguing that unless the entire trip is on one ticket, the customer will be responsible for the excess baggage for the last segment/s.
I have never had any problem personally on connecting segments on Philippine Airlines, Thai, Singapore, Air China, KLM, etc. where my 2pc baggage allowance was maintained even though the normal allowance would have been 20 Kgs/45lbs.
Any information that would ...... - 2008-11-30
» Damaging wind event in Michigan
I'm curious if anyone from Michigan or northern Indiana can relay their experiences about the intense squall line that roared through much of downstate Michigan during the predawn hours thismorning. Many reporting stations had gusts over 60mph and some had gusts approaching 80mph.
I noticed their were a couple of SVR's issued but lightning strikes were sparse at best. I'm guessing this was just a narrow zone of intense gradient winds and with the low topped convective cells along the front, the higher winds at the 900-850mb. level were being propelled to the surface, hence the locally intense wind gusts reported.
So I would love to here those reports. Merry Christmas!!!

I'm sorry-- this is strange. If he stays in the race-- and Sharpe actually runs-- he will take votes away from Sharpe and make Cory's life easier.
This is, for the most part, Sharpe's fault. By not telling anyone what he's doing-- he is creating chaos amongst his own supporters. Sharpe's tactics may make great press and great theater-- but I'm not so sure how politically smart it is.

The loads have been creeping up on the inbound leg to YYZ and the outbound loads are definitely getting larger. So it's definitely not an issue of not selling seats.

In today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution, there is a long article about AirTran’s plans to curtail its growth. This last year’s growth rate was under 20%, below the growth level of the few previous years.
AirTran was also said to be cutting back its orders of new planes.
My own view is that if AirTran feels it is peaking out, then it needs to decide if it is seriously planning to become a realistic alternative for business travelers.
AirTran needs to get on with filling out its network of routes. There are real holes in the eastern states. And there are spokes out to the west that still need to be put in place. I think they are about ten cities away from being a believable “first” choice for business travel.

Have you read the XBMC online manual (wiki)?OK. No offence but,
I've looked at that manual before (a few weeks ago). To me, it's not very clear and overly complex. Luckily, I've just found the online set guide (192.168s and all that) in the Appendixes section. I'd have thought it'd be on the wiki index (left side).

» Here's a Lesson for AC to Ponder
For those who fear that our concerns inevitably fall on deaf ears, I offer the following link:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=779129
While I understand the concern expressed by a few posters, that sort of customer service is quite impressive IMO.
Are there any similar examples from AC? I kind of doubt it because we've just had 200+ posts on the decline of domestic J, and I didn't see one official post from the folks who could learn from them. In fact, several posts at the end related to the lack of any Customer Relations response to direct complaints.A concierge once brought connecting boarding passes to me after I had already boarded. Does that count?Anyway the rest of the flight - no issues.... IFE worked with...... - 2008-11-30
» Shooting the Moon
A few months ago I was shooting the moon, and i thought they turned out pretty good. Last night I tried to shoot the moon again with clouds going by. But all I kept getting was a bright shining moon, instead of it being crisp. Even with different shutter speeds. What's the best setting for shooting the moon? Here's my first pic.
http://www.shanemacaulay.com/photography/moon.jpgYou have to shoot the moon in Manual. Its alot brighter than your camera thinks.
When Hand Holding(I dont own a tripod) I usually start with a Shutter speed around 125 and aperture around 8.
If I had a tripod I would bump the aperture to something like 11 or 16 and drop the shutter speed to 25 or so.
These are all handheld, and if your curious the Shot data i...... - 2008-11-30
» SEA - ORD Double Miles for New Service
http://www.alaskaair.com/www2/Promo/Registration/PromoEntry.asp?pid=AS0414
The Terms & Conditions are kind of odd though:
If your ticket is purchased from American Airlines and operated by Alaska Airlines, you will not earn Double Miles.
Flights that are purchased from Alaska Airlines and operated by American Airlines will qualify for Double Miles.
So AA coded flights on AS metal do not count for double miles, but AS coded flights on AA metal does count? That seems rather odd... giving double miles for flights on AA metal on the same route (even if AS markets the flight).Because they are two different airlines, it's not so unusual that their promotions are not the same. AA isn't offering double miles on AS operated flights because the...... - 2008-11-30

Mileage Plus and Advantex announce new online mall... 40+ top e-retailers and miles with every online purchase
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/021106/to274a_1.htmlIs this signaling the demise of MyPoints?I know that this is probably a silly question, but why is it that primarily the same retailers are featured in every points-earning online mall (like WorldPerks Mall, My Points, Mileage Plus Mall...)? For example, Omaha Steaks, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Mrs Fields Cookies, Office Max.
Specifically, I wonder why Amazon.com, Circuit City, or Staples do not participate in these deals. I know it must be a marketing decision, but it would be nice to have some competition at these portals, wouldn't it? If BN.com isn't giving me a good price, I w...... - 2008-11-30
» 2005 U/G Cert Expiry Dates
Hi,
I know that the upgrade certs state that they expire the end of Feb 2006. Has anyone heard whether or not they will extend the date as they did with the 2004 upgrade certs?
Just wondering..No real idea, I'm afraid (though I thought the previous extension was because of significant delays in sending out certs/m'ship packs at the time)...
... but welcome to FT!!Welcome to FT. :)
AE extended the validity period last year because there was a significant delay in getting the kits out (they apparently got a little wet).
People have already started to receive their 2006 kits in the mail, and it looks like a many more have been mailed on the 13th and 17th.

» free/cheap street parking near Grand Hyatt DC?
Hi,
Is there any free street parking within walking distance of the Grand Hyatt DC (1000 H St NW)? We'll be arriving Saturday around noon, and leaving Sunday afternoon.
Thanks for any input,
BostonbaiThere should be plenty of parking but some areas in DC run meters late (in Georgetown it is until 10 pm). I think it's 6 pmish where you are on a Saturday. As long as you can walk a bit then you should find something.
IIRC, meters along 12th St. are no parking during rush hour (16:00 to 18:30). Not sure if that translates to meters operating until 16:00 on Saturday. Anyway, my gut feeling is that your best chances are down toward the mall in that direction near the Reagan building and Federal Triangle. The bureaucrats are away durin...... - 2008-11-30

Ok, I have this site that is linked by other pages. Problem is, is that all the inner pages are found in a frameset. But I'll have a go at giving some help anyway.
The Frameset page is a seperate HTML file. In it you declare the frames. I find it useful to give them all names, eg:
From here on, when you want to open a page in a specific frame, your link code will look something link this:

» 70% mileage from Aeroplan on Air China – why?
I flew Air China PEK-ARN and was surprised at how few miles I got (70% of distance). Mrs Donard, who saves miles with Asiana, got the full amount.
Sure enough, the Aeroplan rules (https://www.aeroplan.com/earn_miles/our_partners/partner_details.do) state it clearly that for classes B, M, H, K, they award 70% of miles flown (minimum 350). I checked a number of other *A FF programs, and they all gave 100% for H class (we were on a RTW ticket). I suppose I should have checked as SAS flies the same route, with 100% Aeroplan miles. I just assumed a *A RTW ticket would give full miles on all legs (not so).
However, I am wondering why AP/AC negotiated such a poor deal with Air China. Air China only entered *A in 2008. They were willing...... - 2008-11-30

» Non-clickable Menu Items?
I'm wondering whether there is an easy way to have a menu item be usable (i.e. not disabled) and still have it allow submenus and so on, BUT, not be clickable.
For example, if you go to the toolbars / menus sample, click the "Button w/ Menu" button and then hover over the "Choose a Color" you get the palette submenu. but if you accidently click the "Choose a Color" its doing a click to href "#" and causes the menu to go away.
Its a minor thing, but it can cause some usability issues for the, ah, pointer challenged. :)

» Best Seats in back on 763
I did a search but only found info for J. I am flying with the wife and Daughter YYC-LHR Dec 25-Jan 9, and am wondering what the best seats would be to choose. Both flights are on a 763. Also, does status affect availabe seat choices? I will be Elite very soon, and wonder if this might open up better seats. I have always flown over by myself, or with a buddy, first trip with the family. The best seats, if you can get them, are the exit rows (18 & 19). There's a lot more space. Beyond that, I would recommend the rows forward of those (but perhaps not 16/17 which are next to the galley/washroom) for earlier food service, easier to get in and out. These are considered the "premium" rows and are supposed to be held for status pax, but I'm not ...... - 2008-11-30
» Another post about racism in Japan
I'm currently reading this book American Fuji by Sara Backer. It talks a lot about racism in Japan against Americans. It seems everywhere in this book the American person is being screamed at by school children. Of course they scream "GAIJIN!" or something of the sort. One of the major characters is a woman, who was fired from her university teaching job aparently for being an unmarried woman over the the age of 27. Although it is said in the book Shizuoka (where this takes place) is a very conservative city. I was just wondering what places aren't so conservative and all that stuff. I just wanna know everything about racism in Japan, it realy facinates me.

However, even with some major improvments Japan sort of falls behind in gender equality sector, in the work force in particular. A report Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development telling Japan to raise it's employment rate for women.
The report pointed out that 70% of women retire permantly from the labor force due to the reality that after staying home to raise their families for several years. The only work that's available is low-paying part time work.

» $500 to spend and no where to go
I have a $500 unused ticket with AC that expires on Feb. 16 (the issue date was Feb. 16, 2001). AC rules prohibit extending it (I even offered to pay a fee). Ideally, I would like to use it for a quick hop (2-3 days max as a I have a newborn at home) to LHR or FRA since I have family there and I can get lots of miles. However, I can't find any flights for less than $950 (I tried Expedia). I'd be willing to fork over a couple of hundred more at most.
Can anyone find any flights?
If that doesn't work, where can I fly (before Feb. 16) for $500 for one night that maximize miles received ?
